The Story
Long before electric refrigeration, mountain ice was one of California's most valuable commodities. During the Gold Rush era, workers harvested massive blocks of ice from frozen Sierra lakes and streams high above Placerville, hauling them down rugged mountain roads to supply foothill communities throughout the hot summer months.
The name Ice House traces its roots to this historic Sierra ice trade. Near present-day Ice House Road and the Crystal Basin region, harvested ice was stored in primitive mountain ice houses before continuing its journey to Gold Country towns below. In Placerville, businesses such as the historic John Pearson Soda Works relied on thick stone walls and naturally cool underground storage areas to preserve this precious resource.
Ice House Cold Brew™ pays tribute to the hardworking pioneers, teamsters, and mountain workers whose determination helped keep Gold Country cool long before the arrival of modern refrigeration.
A Verse for the Journey
Proverbs 21:5
"The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty."
The men who harvested and hauled Sierra ice understood the value of preparation. Their work began long before the summer heat arrived, requiring patience, perseverance, and a commitment to the task at hand. Through diligent effort, they provided a resource that sustained communities throughout the year. Their example reminds us that faithful preparation today often creates blessings for tomorrow.
